UPDATED (4 p.m.)
Kansans by the bucketful, at least in Johnson County, turned out for this morning's Republican caucuses with wrap-around-the-block lines at the Matt Ross Community Center, 8101 Marty in Overland Park.
The 20,000 turnout didn't approach the 37,000 who showed up for the Democratic Party's caucuses in Kansas Tuesday night that saw lines that stretched, literally, a mile long in places.
Still, GOP officials said they were pleased, especially given Mitt Romney's abrupt exit from the race Thursday.
"Tremendous," crowed Mary Alice Beach of Lenexa as she waited to vote at the Matt Ross Community Center, 8101 Marty in Overland Park . "It proves the American people are really with their government."
Tom Moore of Prairie Village said the turnout suggested that voters wanted "to send a message to their own candidate, which presumably will be McCain: Go right."
Oh, lots of grumbling about the fact that Kansas has confusing party caucuses and not a more modern primary system for expressing support for presidential contenders.
State Rep. Kay Wolf, a Prairie Village Republican, had the guts to admit to the caucus crowd that she opposed funding a primary this year.
But that will change for 2012, she predicted.
Next time, Wolf said, "I think you will see that we will have a primary."

Keep the Caucus!
After participating today, I'm more convinced than ever that a caucus system is the way to go. We need more locations next time but otherwise it was awesome. Lots of excitement, lots of new volunteers, candidates of all kinds promoting themselves to guaranteed voters... it was great! I would be very upset if my lawmakers wasted my tax dollars on a primary after seeing how a well run caucus can work In fact, I'd be happy to see the August primaries replaced with a caucus system!
