Top Missouri Republican officials said this evening that Congressman Kenny Hulshof will run for governor this year and has begun calling donors to tell them that.

"He's going to make a major announcement about the future of Missouri tomorrow," said John Hancock, a Missouri GOP consultant working with the campaign.

Hancock declined to say what the congressman's plans are, but other Republicans said he's in the race.

Hulshof and his spokesman could not be reached for comment.

Hulshof's apparent entry begins to put into sharp focus a GOP field that until just a few days ago was a giant jumble.

All this, of course, comes in the wake of Gov. Matt Blunt's big announcement last week that he's not seeking re-election this year.

The GOP field now appears to shape up as Hulshof, state treasurer Sarah Steelman who visited Liberty today as part of a kickoff tour and Lt Gov. Peter Kinder.

Other Republicans who have already dropped out, or are expected to, include House Speaker Rod Jetton, former House Speaker Catherine Hanaway, Congressman Jo Ann Emerson and former state Rep. Jack Jackson (now running for lieutenant governor).

Although Steelman and Kinder have won statewide office, Hulshof will be regarded as the favorite by many Republicans because of his long-time-in-waiting status, congressional tenure and conservative-to-moderate credentials.
