Kansas Republican Sen. Sam Brownback met with the Iraqi ambassador to the United States today.

Brownback and Ambassador Samir Sumaida’ie discussed recent military operations and the prospect of political reconciliation. The Senate last month passed legislation introduced by Brownback and Democratic Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware that called on the Iraqis to create federal regions.

“Ambassador Sumaida’ie and I agree on the importance of a political solution in Iraq,” Brownback said. “I urged him to support federalism, which I believe provides the best chance for Iraq to reach political equilibrium and stabilize the country.”
