Why not cut down all the trees and the deer will move to another park. Then cut down the trees in that park until all the parks in Kansas have no trees. Then the deer can move to Missouri and then problem solved!

How does our society create a person like this? It is the way of nature, dude. Deer can't be allowed to over populate an area without adverse effects. Would you rather a larger number starve to death for the next 5 years and infect your children with Lyme disease?

Isn't the venison from the controlled shooting being donated to food banks? If the protesters get their way, I hope they are prepared to make donations to make up for the food they prevented those in need from getting...

along with others of this mindset, to bear the cost of damages (both property and health) suffered by others because this deer over population? I've seen many vehicle accidents caused by deer right here in the KC metro area.

Desperate times, call for desperate measures. If the people in these communities weren't cutting all the trees down and building houses, then feeding the deer we wouldn't have this problem. The deer only stay around because they are feeding them. I have worked in many of these places and seen the deer walk right up to the people and get food out of their hands. They are tamed, and it's the peoples fault for doing it. The deer shouldn't be murdered because of what they did. The problem should be solved by the use of birth control to cut down the large population. If people are going to continue feeding the deer, they should be fined for doing so, it only hurts the animals in the long run.

The deer population should be managed in the Shawnee Mission park. Wish there were more predators in the park that could naturally keep populations under control.

The one thing that always gets me is when people like andreaskc talks about the effects of over population they never mention humans. Everything stated was accurate, but we never seem to want to point the finger at us. One of the reasons there are so many deer in SMP is because there are so many humans squeezing wildlife into smaller areas.

SMP problem is micronism of what's happening all over the world. To many people! Population control needs to be enacted in every country.

There is only so much space on this planet. We are 7 billion worldwide now and growing. What other species has a population of 7 billion? I'm sure they use a lot fewer resources than we do.

Most ocean fisheries are depleted, species extinction is happening at an accelerated rate, tilable land is becoming scare, fresh water is getting scarce, polluted water is increasing, disease is spreading.

All to often when the facts are laid out, everyone wants to deny or kick the can down the road. We don't want to apply the same science to us. Hopefully, actions will be taken by all countries to reverse this trend, but not to optimistic.

No one likes to see a living thing suffer in death or in life. Sometimes, animals suffer a greater death if left unchecked by nature, as is the case with the park's deer herd. There aren't any wolves to prey on them and man isn't allowed to hunt them in a park to keep the population to a healthy size. The land can only support so many animals. If allowed to go unchecked and over-populate, herds become weak from inbreeding and diseases. Food shortages will also make them weak from starvation and cause greater suffering than death. Most hate to see nature's beauty destroyed but nature can be very unkind also. Wasting disease, much like mad cow disease, is a much sader and inhumane death to an animal than a bullet.

So acting as if the deer don't have a place to go is just disingenuous.

Leave buckets of condoms under the trees. Its hard enough to get human males to use condoms, let along male deer.

Humans have displaced the deers natural predators. Remember all the uproar when the coyotes where returning to the suburbs? A few pets were snatched up. What if that was a child instead? So that isn't a valid alternative. For us to act reponsibly, we must keep nature in check and take the place of the predator that we've displaced. To not act to thin these herds the disease and suffering to the deer population will be much worse then what the Parks and Rec is going to do.

While there may be lots of rural acreage around for the park's deer herd, don't forget....coyotte packs do prey on deer, and hunters with crossbows and arrows, as well as rifles find it sport to take venison for the table or trophy mounts. If, as another poster cites above, people have been stupid enough to tame the wild deer in SM Park not to fear humans, and were the deer to be relocated to rural areas, they probably wouldn't last too long in the wild. Farmers rely on their crops for a living, not to feed their beans, corn, peaches, apples, etc. to problematic deer. Deer, while enjoyable to watch, in large numbers can do a great deal of damage to crops, gardens, young trees and shrubs. They also are carriers of the dreaded tick which can transmit deadly diseases to humans and they are notorious for causing very serious wrecks on poorly lit country roads and freeways. So please don't think about dumping your unwanted, starving, and people friendly animals out here, we have enough of them already. Our numbers are soaring also, and we don't even intentionally feed them

Why is it that PA which is one of the most heavily hunted state has the most deer, the highest deer vehicle accident and tops in Lyme Disease? Explain that to me?!!

Every state that has hunting always had "too many deer" and high deer vehicle accident, why? Perhaps because of all the food plots and supplement feeding to grow large antlered deer and even increase deer herd size. You heard that right, hunting pulic spends thousands upon thousands of dollars on their food plots, supplement feeding and many "deer management" website will tell you how and here is one for example from North American Whitetails.

Food is what increases fawn birth and with all these supplement feeding etc you will have so many deer and deer comes to Shawnee Park to seek refuge now once they mass slaughter the deer in Shawnee Mission Park you can bet with the compensatory rebound the deer numbers will shoot right back up to pre-kill #'s maybe even more and those who cried about their tulips will be have deer chowing down on it again and again and again year after year with no end in site which is great for the DNR and the killing industry.

Killing will not work and guarantee you will see lots of deer in no time flat then you will see bowhunters coming in year after year slaughtering deer in your park.

Why was what Jason did today a problem? It was natural. This is real life folks, that’s what happens to the deer after they have suffered a slow agonizing death. If these are urban deer and supposedly eating peoples tulips then its sure bet the deer has pesticided in their carcass meaning the DNR are knowingly giving deer carcass with pesticides to the pantries and deer carcass not inspected by the USDA. Also how about CWD? There has already been cases of death from CWD to Venison eaters plus recently it was found in W.VA . Do you know how deadly prions are? Fire nor boiling will kill prions for they are defected proteins and once it attacks the body its death sentence. What worse with the pantries they usually ground the venison carcass and it only take sick deer to contimate it all.

I say all those who are so pro-kill you take home the deer carcass and eat it, give it to your family and friends.

If you really look at those list you will see some with bullets flying into peoples homes, bullets narrowly missing 2 kids in daycare center, people driving cars getting hit , horse riders hit, etc. That is terrorism. The park is turned into a kill zone each fall and we cannot even walk the park with peace of mind as terrorist are in tree stand, blinds, even blending in with the forest (really creepy).

The people in Shawnee Mission Park were worried about deer overpopulation now? well, they are going to have a lot more to worry about in times to come if they go with the lethal. Rest assure the killers will be in your park year after year after year and now you all have to wear orange each killing season because of the danger that they will mistaken you for a deer (look at hunting accident list). For those who did not stand up for the deer and wanted "quick solution". Karma means you reap what you sow...

The Dept of Conservation has done too good of a job with wildlife management. That is, if bringing back native species from near extinction to now unmanageable numbers is the criteria for this statement.

Hunter's permit fees, and fines have been used, along with tax money, to increase populations of deer, game birds, geese and ducks. It was never the intent to bring these game animals back to our forests and parks for people to tame and feed. As a matter of fact, they were intended to provide natural game for sportsmen, not picnicers. It wasn't too many years ago, these commonplace species were almost non-existent. To catch a glimpse of a deer or to see a flock of geese, was a a rare treat. Not so any more: there are just too many and not enough balance has been provided by predators, both four legged and two legged.

What to do with them today is the real problem and the reason we are in disagreement. If any of you have ever lost hundreds of dollars on newly planted trees (needed for shade) to a buck in rut, or gardens trampled and eaten daily, or goose droppings on your lawns and driveways so thick you can't stand up after a rain, then you need to have this experience before you call out others for being vile, morbid or inhumane. Try using verbs like sane, responsible, educated and intelligent.

Another point worthy of mention is the deer-car accidents which certainly cost each of us higher insurance premiums. But more importantly is the loss of HUMAN life or loss of a limb or cognitive skills to an unsuspecting HUMAN resulting from these collisions.

For the poster citing hunting accidents to provide her case is ludacris when compared to all the human life lost when a car hits a deer or swerves hitting the deer and hits another vehicle in the process. Of all the hunters around this country, the percentage of accidental deaths is very very low, especially when compared to the number of deaths and the dollar damage to the public on car-deer accidents.

What Jason has done is to show the reality right in the face of the public who continue to ignore the fact these are sentient enimals no different then if he was holding a dogs head if someone mass slaughtered them. These animal have every right to lives just as you and I would like to, because they cannot reason, they are not worthy of living? They felt the same way about blacks before they abolished slavery in the early 1800 and to capture their suffering and cruelty is what opens people eyes. While it is true to an extent that some deer have been displaced from where they live for new development, it doesn't explain it all. Deer learn where the food is (flowers, bird feeders, vegetable gardens, etc) and go there. I live near 99th & Antioch and see deer on occasion. There is no new construction at all in the area where habitat has been destroyed and the critters uprooted.

I heard this guy on the news last week stating that trapping and relocating derr is the humane way of doing this. Maybe he can foo the bill. A bullet is pretty cheap. About $0.08 last time I checked.

I may not agree with sharpshooters, but controlling the deer population is a must.

Maybe we can trap them all and turn 700 of them loose on Jasons property.
