Sure Sen. McConnell wants to start over on health care. The current versions won't protect the mega profits of the insurance industry that is bankrolling his re-election campaigns and those of his friends.

Isn't is amazing that they can have a "closed door town hall" and think they are getting a "fair and balanced" set of opinions? Oops, I forgot, "fair and balanced" means only the right gets to express an opinion. And the Repub's idea of bi-partisanship is 'do it our way or else we'll whine about it to Rush Limbaugh.'

So... what constitutes a "closed town hall" meeting?

If it's closed, then it's not really a town hall meeting. This is the part that I just don't get.

I understand that "mom and dad" sometimes need "adult time" to have their conversations without "the little ones" interrupting or listening in. Just not sure that this is the case or the proper time.

We need to do Tort Reform, Allow interstate Insurance companies to go over state lines so Competition lowers cost . Allow us to go to other countries to get Drugs Cheaper and for god sake Update our IT stuff. I mean really paper charts are we in the stone ages ?

To all the one sided liberals who claim Republicams are in the pocket of insurance companies, I notice you didn't mention that Barak Obama and Hillary Clinton were the 2 largest recipients of healthcare maoney in the last election cycle. We won't even talk about money from trial lawyers, is that why we can't even get tort reform talked about? I suggest you state all the facts before casting stones. How will this proposal prevent health care companies from denying coverage to those with pre-existing conditions?

How will we know that we are not buying junk insurance? There is a story of a programmer who thought he had insurance for hospitalization. He did -- the insurance paid for his stay in the hospital but did not pay for any procedures that were done in the hospital. Shouldn't such policies be prohibited EVERYWHERE? Allowing any company to sell such a policy may happen in some states with strong pro-health insurance interests.

Missouri has tort reform which has lowered doctors' premiums yet medical costs keep rising. Obviously, tort reform is not the solution. That is all my post was saying.

keep going up because "competition" causes each hospital in the area to get the most expensive and newest technology whether its needed or not!!! How many MRI's do we really need in one town? PET scans? CAT scans? We also keep paying more premiums to insurance companies who are paying less and less over time in "medical losses" (that would be actual claims) so for every $1 you send to an insurance company, only $0.80 is actually spent on health care. This system is so corrupt and so inefficient, I don't think it can be fixed. I for one though am shocked that Children's Mercy Hospital would let itself be used by the right wing propaganda machine. Didn't most of these senators oppose the SCHIP funding that is crucial to their survival? McConnell is raising scare tactics about Medicare/Medicaid funding cuts, when what has actually been proposed is eliminating INSURANCE SUBSIDIES for Medicare patients! Also, if you totally eliminated liability costs from the system, it would not decrease costs by any appreciable amount, most studies say less than 3%.

For several years I got my drugs from Canada since the cost was lower and the company supplying those drugs were the same, however, here in the U.S. the drug costs were not contolled as they are in Canada. Tells you that one country is protecting their people and here in the U.S. they (Congress) are not protecting the people's interests. You let the money mongers continue down their golden road, you will continue to pay thru the nose and one of these days you will be priced out of your health care regardless of what plan you have unless you have some governmental controls.

I am sick and tired of more taxes...especially the "hidden" taxes of the current system. Over 24% of my health care expense goes to re-coup uninsured recepients. Hospitals and health care providers don't absorb these mandated treatments. They pass the expense on to those who have insurance.

That's taxation without representation and it must halt.

Further 51% of all bankruptcies are due to health issues. I supplement these bankrupticies, another hidden tax.

We need comprehensive health care reform immediately. I am sick and tired of these hidden taxes.

Just because the Kansas City wrote an article about Tort Reform in the last week does not make it gospel. Their article had some serious gaps in analysis. 1) It did NOT show that insurance premiums for doctor's have dropped appropriately and 2) Did not take into the costs of how malpractice liability alters medical practice.

Even in states with some tort reform, $20k in insurance and $30k in school loans are quite a bit to swallow for a doctor in residency or just starting their practice. There is very little room for error in the first 15-20 years of your career.

To the leftist liberals that want to use this as a straw man argument, please stop being divisive. Tort reform is NOT a magic pill for health care and I don't recall anyone proposing it to be. The failure in our health care system is systemic. It will only be solved by addressing all root causes... NOT by some magic pill, like for example, the "public health insurance plan"

I also like when people mention they used to get meds from canada. Do you know why they do not any more (at least not legally)? Because it was costing canada too much money, they subsidise the meds. And there system is beginning to implode, just as the european systems are.

Until you realize cheaper will mean less quality you deny the truth. How about we provide the cheaper solution, supported by some govt money similar to medicare instead of taking away from those who are happy with what they have?

I had an MRI last November. My insurance company has still not paid for it or for the doctor's visit where it was ordered. Finally this weekend I got a letter from a company that was hired by my insurance company to investigate fraud. They wanted to know why I needed the MRI. 9 months later. The letter stated they had searched workman's comp and accident insurance claims and couldn't find my name.

So my insurance company is spending its money investigating me and why I needed an MRI. My doctor's order which included a lengthy description of the reason for the MRI was not good enough for them. The hospital statement that explained why they did the MRI was not good enough either.

A co-worker is having a similar experience. The insurance company is refusing to pay for her MRI because the results were negative.

My letter also said that if they were unable to determine the need for the MRI I would have to pay out of pocket. Like I guess they think people are running around getting MRIs for the fun of it. Gee nothing else to do today, so why not go to the doctor, lie about an illness, then go up to the hospital, wait in line and have an MRI just for the hell of it?

I have had over 20 mri's in my lifetime, they have all been covered. So your point is you want national health care so you would never get the mri to start with? Great small example.

Oh and the question I have is that mri's on any insurance I have had requires an approval by the insurance company prior to having it done. Maybe simply following the rules would help avoid problems. I know my insurance will not cover the open mri technology, so if I want the test I cannot choose that option. Give us a little more info, sounds like you are leaving out some of the information.

This is also the first time I have ever been questioned about the need for an MRI. And I have had several, all paid for by this same insurance company, which has also paid for the treatments for this same injury I sustained 16 years ago. Some investigation! Idiots would find all they are asking me for if they looked in their own files! And that wouldn't involve paying another company to investigate.

I find myself wondering if I waited nine months to pay my premium, and told the insurance company I was hiring a company to investigate them for fraud, what would happen?

You have just pointed out health care reform that doesn't cost any taxpayer money. More ideas like that from both sides would go a long way to real changes.

That would mean a public option. Single Payer is better but a public option is a good start.

And yes, these insurance companies need to be reigned in. I would think at the very least we will get some laws out of this reform movement that prohibit the worst practices of these insurance companies.

Again, though, a Single Payer system would mean no more greedy insurance companies. That is what I prefer.

McConnell is on the right track. In the 1960's before medicare and medicaid, people would buy inexpensive health care insurance for catastrophic events and pay for routine care out of pocket. Since the late 60's, health care costs have increased 8.5% per year, far exceeding inflation, economic growth, etc. Medicare and medicaid are insolvent, or rapidly getting there. Do we need more of the same? These programs distort the economics of health care. Larding on more legislation in an attempt to fix what they've broken is not the answer. Extricating government from the process is the answer. Too often, however, it sounds like many people are too blind or dependent upon this broken system to see the fix, including our congressmen. Wailing about profits at health insurance companies and is a joke. Would you prefer they lose money? Or should we just tell them how much they can make. Not in this country, I hope.

I would prefer they USE the money we pay them to PROVIDE HEALTH CARE. Gee, novel concept, eh?

If gov't run insurance fails at health care.. they may lose money, but they can't go bankrupt, they can't be fired, and little can be done about it short of a revolution.

Combine that with added federal regulation requiring bad loans in some areas, resulting in unique packaging of financail products. This lead to more bad lending, since they could be "packaged" differently, expanding an already bad system.
