Kansas City’s Human Relations Division has completed its investigation into an incident involving hip-hop artist DJ Jazzy Jeff at the Power & Light District.

But Civil Rights Manager Mickey Dean, who conducted the investigation, said today he was not able to determine conclusively what caused Jazzy Jeff to abruptly cut his June 8 concert short.

(See the attached report).

Jazzy Jeff claimed district officials halted his concert because they didn’t like his rap music. District officials said they had just wanted him to turn the volume down to avoid damage to the sound system.

Dean said the division conducted the investigation because of prior allegations that Power & Light District officials discriminate against some patrons, particularly concerning enforcement of the district’s dress code.

Dean was never able to interview anyone directly with the Jazzy Jeff crew. But he reviewed public statements from people siding with Jazzy Jeff, and he directly interviewed officials with the Power and Light District.

Dean said the two sides gave diametrically opposing stories, and there’s just no way to determine who was telling the truth. Invoices from the district show there was some damage to the sound equipment, but it totaled less than $3,000.

No further action from the city is anticipated at this time.
