Sen. Claire McCaskill will chair the bipartisan Senate committee that will look into the impeachment of U.S. District Judge Samuel Kent of Texas.

Kent is the first federal judge to be impeached in two decades. The House impeached him Friday.

He’s serving a 33-month sentence after pleading guilty to lying about the alleged sexual assaults of two women who worked for him. But Kent remains a federal judge unless he either resigns or is impeached.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid today named McCaskill to head the 12-member panel, which will gather evidence for the Senate’s prosecution of Kent. The Missouri Democrat is a former Jackson County prosecutor.
