Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin blasted late-night comic David Letterman on Friday, saying a joke about her daughter contributes to the "acceptance of abuse of younger women."

The former veep candidate and her family were the focus of Letterman's "Top Ten" list broadcast Tuesday night. But it was a line in his monologue about Palin's visit to Yankee Stadium with her 14-year-old daughter, Willow, that set off waves of criticism.

"One awkward moment for Sarah Palin at the Yankee game, during the seventh inning, her daughter was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez," he quipped.

Letterman tried to calm the storm by saying he was making the crack about 18-year-old single mom Bristol Palin - not Willow who attended the Bombers game with mom and former GOP presidential contender Rudy Giuliani.

Palin isn't buying it.

"Matt, I would say that you and anybody else are extremely naive to believe that very convenient excuse of David Letterman's the other day," she told NBC's Matt Lauer.

Palin criticized the funny man for taking a couple of days "to think of that excuse." The pitbull in lipstick said comments like Letterman's contribute to low self-esteem among young women.

In a sharply worded response to the off-color remarks, a Palin spokesperson said earlier this week that "it would be wise to keep Willow away from David Letterman," a veiled suggestion that he couldn't be trusted around teen girls.

Asked Friday to explain the statement, Palin dug her claws in.

"Hey, take it however you want to take it," she shot back. "It is a comment that came from the heart that Willow, no doubt, would want to stay away from David Letterman after he made such a comment. And you can interpret that however you want to interpret it."

Letterman asked Palin to appear on his show while she was in New York. She refused.
