Letterman: No apology for Palin jokes

We keep seeing folks attacking Gov. Palin.
We keep seeing Gov. Palin giving them plenty of material to use.
We keep seeing other folks rabidly defending Gov. Palin.

It seems to me this is idiomatic of the crisis of the Republican party.
The leadership is in shambles. A USAToday article yesterday, based on an USAToday/Gallup poll showed 38% of Republicans do not like their party. When asked who is the leader of the party, the person with the greatest votes was Rush Limbaugh at 13%. George W. Bush, Newt, Cheney and Steelman were all in the lower single digits.

Clearly the GOP is going to be in trouble in 2010. They have failed to capitalize on the Pelosi debacle. She is currently polling worse than the flammable Dick Cheney.

Further, they are not effectively distancing themselves from recent murders committed be ultra-conservative (and likely "nuts") individuals. The Democrats are effectively portraying these people as "right-wing". I don't agree.

Was Letterman's comments inappropriate? Certainly, even he agrees they were in poor taste.
But we can count on more of this type of commentary as long as the GOP flounders for a legitimate voice.

The fact that her mother is a public figure -- even one whose position on sex ed makes no rational sense -- does not justify joking about her having casual public sex with celebrities.

And calling Palen's appearance "slutty"? That is in the same category as Coulter calling John Edwards "gay" (which recent events have shown to be one of her many misjudgments). Just mean-spirited and insulting

Frankly, a guy who just bothered to get married to the mother of his kid...

This is not about Republicans or Democrats, and it really isn't even about Palin. It's the fact that these kind of derogatory remarks against women are allowed. Imus got fired over calling basketball players "nappy headed hos". It now is obvious that if he had just called them "hos" he could have kept his job; people only get fired over racist remarks, not sexist ones.

The best quote I read yesterday comes from a decidedly leftist blog: "Every joke about raping Sarah Palin or her daughter is a joke about raping you." We cannot allow this to continue because it diminshes us all.

Letterman relys on the "jackass" factor to stay noticed, and I am sure a lot of this is for shock value.

I saw the bit, and I do not think it was funny in the least. Just because Bristol's Mom is a politician does not mean it is okay to mock her family on what should be a private matter.

I either completely missed that comment or you made that up. I will agree that what he inappropriately stated implied a sexual congress between Bristol and A-Rod, but rape wasn't a part of what he said or implied.
I do believe women of age have, are, and will engage in consenual sexual relations.
So, alwaysfiredup, before you attempt to distort this story with your own biases, examine what is fact from fiction. Letterman did not imply any sanctions for illegal or predatory sexual intercourse.

Now, back to my point, Letterman and others are going to pick on Republicans like Palin as the GOP tries to orient itself and recover its position of being a worthy political party with a viable platform and talented leadership.

As long as the GOPers swoon over the perky and cute Ms. Palin and ignore her otherwise limited vitae to be a party leader---she will be the butt of these jokes. And the party will suffer!

This isn't a good thing for America.

Sarah Palin took her 14 year-old Willow to the game in which Letterman said "Alex Rodriguez knocked her up." And please quit excusing Letterman. If Don Imus said that he'd be fired on the spot.

I think Palin many times should turn the other cheek. But when a 62 year-old man says it is OK to knocked up a 14 year-old, I hope Sarah Palin bitch-slaps him into next week.

And for once the dad spoke up. I am certain that Letterman wants nothing to do with Todd Palin.

Bristol is the daughter he mentioned.
Willow is not the daughter he mentioned.

Bristol is 18 and therefore an adult.
Willow is 14 and therefore is not an adult.

In either case, Letterman's comment were clearly inappropriate. But he did not say or condone "rape".

There's plenty of butt-kicking of Letterman that we can all agree should occur. But, to exaggerate and distort the words is also inappropriate.

But be certain of this. Palin is not going to escape the satire of the humorists as long as she tries (miserably in my opinion, but that's another issue) to be a leader within the GOP. She is just too far out of her league to escape the pundits swipes.

I'm okay firing Letterman for this comment. As long as we do this based on what he said, not what others are trying to say he said.

But you're wrong on this one. I've already seen the clip. Letterman mentioned that Palin took her daughter to the Yankees game, period. Then he said Rodriguez knocked her up.

Palin took her daughter to the game alright, it was the 14 year-old, Willow.

It appears to be a manufactured distraction. Anything to avoid the issues that are killing the GOP:

It was not that long ago that Letterman joked about Palin's church burning down. Is that any different than those who burned black churches in the south?

And the only child who went to the ball game was Willow, the 14 year old. An adult A Rod's age who has sex with a 14 year old is engaging in rape. A child 14 cannot legally consent to engage in sex.

Letterman has gone from being an offbeat comic to a bitter old man spewing hatred about people of faith and the children of politicians he doesn't like. Boycott his sponsors and let them know about it. It's time for him to retire.

Dennis Miller had a reasonable explanation this morning for what Letterman said. Miller said that there was a good chance it was actually a joke by one of the writers, and Letterman didn't know it was the younger girl out there and just delivered the line. Miller said even he's had writers come up with jokes that he had to pull back, if he caught them in time. Miller, a conservative, wasn't that upset.

PM, 2 things. First, I would expect defense of Letterman from some of the resident Libs on this board, but not you. Second, how can you make an intelligent comment without viewing the clip? You are better than that.
Owen Thursday, Miller at least has the intestinal fortitude to offer heart felt and real apologies for his tasteless off color jokes. He once made a joke about Ellen DeGeneres' sexuality and has since stated that he was a punk at the time and shouldn't have made the joke.
If CBS doesn't suspend Letterman then they are b*lless dirtbags.

I thought the jokes were in poor taste. I couldn't care less whether Letterman is fired or not. I'm not defending him.

I don't think I ever "defended" Letterman. In fact, I believe I said pretty clearly that it was okay with me to fire him. I did add the caveat as long as it was based on his words and not those of others who are trying to add their own spin on things.
That doesn't sound like much of a defense does it? If I was Letterman's lawyer I would be disbarred for malfeasance.
If he said anything about the 14 year old Willow...he must be sanctioned.
Now that I've viewed the tape, I didn't hear that.
So the parallel to Imus is not there.
Imus clearly said what got him into trouble.
In Letterman's case, only those who later learned it was Willow, not Bristol, that went to the game would think much about the issue. Bristol is of age. Ergo, to hang the "rape" charge on Letterman seems to require more extrapolation and addition to the joke than the prima facie evidence demonstrates.

I guess I'm worried that we seem to have lost our humor by adding to the satire rather than accepting it as it is. Mark Twain, Will Rogers and others of the past might have been intimidated by our internet response to their humor. Within seconds of making a joke, these guys would have been goggled and chastised into silence by us.

Let's keep our heads. If Letterman erred he must go. Absolutely.
But, I don't think he encouraged "rape" of anyone...especially a 14 year old girl.
And our country doesn't need less humor...it needs more. Lots more.

Actually, the Letterman joke was more about Alex Rodriguez than Palin's daughter.

However, I wonder where all of these outraged people were when Rush Limbaugh joked about Chelsea Clinton.

Of course, Boss Limbaugh is now telling his sheep not to buy General Motors or Chrysler cars. Let's really destroy American companies.

Both sides of this issue are trying to read more into this story than it merits.
Legitimately, I identify the most with Todd Palin. If someone said this about one of my daughters, regardless of age, I would want to seek retribution.
There's nothing phony about a father's reaction in this situation.
I do think others are not as concerned about the kids as they are in making political points. Sarah Palin's "outrage" doesn't register as a Mom as much as it does an opportunistic politician.
Others, seem to want to use this as an example of the dysfunctionality of the GOP. I fall into that group.
If Palin is going to continue to demonstrate her lack of qualification to be a national leader- I'm going to continue to call her out.
But, unlike some, I find no glee in the problems facing the Republicans. I am very concerned they are in the trouble. We must have a two-party system in America to remain the best country in the world.

We need some humor right now.
