JEFFERSON CITY | Gov. Jay Nixon on Thursday distanced his administration from the process that allowed the release of a report linking support for libertarian and conservative causes to domestic terrorism.
"I was not governor when the MIAC was formed," Nixon said. "I was not governor, I did not hire any of the people there and nobody in my administration -- the director of public safety -- saw this stuff before it went out."
MIAC is the acronym for the Missouri Information Analysis Center, the so-called “fusion center” for local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to collaborate on domestic security issues, that produced the report.
Nixon said the report was compiled and released through a process instituted under his predescessor, Republican Gov. Matt Blunt, and unbeknownst to him and his top law enforcement appointees.
“Under a previous system, MIAC would prepare and distribute these reports to law enforcement agencies without review or approval from the colonel of the Highway Patrol or the director of Public Safety,” Nixon said. “That’s simply not acceptable.”
Nixon applauded the changes announced yesterday by Missouri State Highway Patrol Superintendent Col. James Keathley, which will require review by the superintendent and the director of public safety before reports are disseminated to law enforcement agencies.
He also called MIAC's mission "important."
"I think the new system will clearly focus resources where they need to be and stay away from any of these situations with potential..." Nixon trailed off, before adding, "We've got enough bad guys to catch. We shouldn't spend our time looking at good guys."

Change of Story
Funny how a few days ago Gov. Nixon stood behind the report, now he is criticising it. Do they think our memory is that short? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvFAlJ5op-8
