Gov. Kathleen Sebelius refused to say Monday whether she’s been asked to join President Barack Obama’s cabinet as secretary of Health and Human Services.

“I am your governor,” she told reporters after signing several formal proclamations honoring Black History Month and other events. “… I love the job that I do.”

She said “I’m not speculating” when asked if she expected Obama to ask her to join his cabinet, or whether she would say yes.

Sebelius said she’s busy doing the state’s work, citing ongoing negotiations with lawmakers over budget cuts, a visit this week by Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, and talk about how the state could implement a federal stimulus package.

“I’m doing exactly what we need to do this week,” she said.

Reporters weren’t the only one curious about Sebelius’ future. Before she spoke briefly to reporters, Sebelius hosted several groups from around the state for formal proclamation signings.

When Sebelius congratulated one man being recognized in a proclamation for winning an agricultural award, he responded by saying “I understand congratulations may be in order for you, too.”

Then during a proclamation for Black History Month, a woman said “somebody ask her if she’s hanging around.”

“I’m here aren’t I,” Sebelius replied with a smile.
