The Senate confirmed Treasury nominee Timothy Geithner late today, 60-34, but both Kansas senators opposed him and Missouri's Kit Bond would have, but missed the vote.

Bond, a Republican, was absent because his plane was delayed. But Kansas Republicans Pat Roberts and Sam Brownback cast "no" ballots against the New York Federal Reserve chief.

Geithner has come under fire for  failing to pay his income taxes when he worked for the International Monetary Fund.

He also played a key role in last fall's bailout of the financial industry.

Brownback said Geithner's tax mistakes were "inexcusable" for someone who would head Treasury.

He also said,  "Geithner was responsible for watching the big financial institutions precisely at the time when they acted most irresponsibly and made decisions that led to our current crisis. "

Bond said in a statement that putting Geither in charge of tax enforcement would be "like having a chain smoker for surgeon General."

Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill, a Democrat, supported Geithner.
