WASHINGTON (AP) — President Obama is preparing to tap George Mitchell, the former Senate Democratic leader, for a top diplomatic post for the Middle East.
Officials told The Associated Press today that the new administration is preparing to announce the appointment shortly. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they have not been authorized to disclose it publicly.
Mitchell would assist Hillary Rodham Clinton, Obama’s pick for secretary of State. The Senate was expected to vote on Clinton’s nomination later today.
The parameters of Mitchell’s role were not immediately clear. Recent reports said Dennis Ross, longtime U.S. negotiator, would be named an adviser to Clinton. Mitchell, 75, took on difficult diplomatic assignments during President Bill Clinton’s presidency.

Another Terrific Choice...
Senator Mitchell is credited with helping find major solutions to the conflict that ripped Ireland apart.
True, there are still concerns, but the open terror that gripped this region have been in check since Senator Mitchell provided skillful diplomacy.
Some will say this appointment is yet another Clinton retread. A return to the past from a President that speaks about a New Era.
Regardless, this is an opportunity to send someone to the Mideast who has a chance of making a significant contribution toward finding peace.
