A new poll out today by SurveyUSA and KCTV Channel 5 shows a three-eighth cent sales tax for light rail winning.
The poll showed light rail with support from 39 percent of likely voters. Twenty-nine percent were opposed.
There was a hefty undecided of 32 percent, leaving plenty of room for the election to go either way.
When the undecideds were asked whether they were leaning for or against, light rail looks even better with 46 percent either in favor or leaning in that direction.
Meanwhile, 35 percent were opposed or leaning against. About 19 percent was undecided.
Veteran Kansas City pollster Pat Gray said tonight that the poll squares with his internal polling for the light rail campaign.
He did add that his numbers, which he declined to divulge, were showing fewer undecided voters.
"We have a lot of work to do between now an Election Day," Gray said.
He did disclose that his internal polling showed that about 70 percent of voters thought Kansas City should undertake some major public works project in difficult economic times.
That may be so, but will they pay for it?
SurveyUSA interviewed 800 Kansas City adults Oct. 19 and Oct. 20. Of them, 763 were registered to vote. Of the registered voters, 675 were identified by SurveyUSA as being likely to vote in the Nov. 4 general election.

... from the high bleachers
Normally, a ballot proposal will lose if it polls much under 50% this close to voting day. This polls at 39% Yes? Not looking good by usual rules of thumb.
