John Truman at Independence courthouse Jackson County Democrats held a rally beneath the statue of Harry Truman in Independence Wednesday to oppose Republican presidential candidate John McCain’s visit to the Truman library.
They were joined by John Truman, the former president’s grandnephew, who gave a scathing critique of McCain’s positions. The comments were made on the steps of the county courthouse where Harry Truman once governed.
Here are the comments included in a statement from the Missouri Democratic Party:
John Truman:
“I knew President Truman. I never called him that, I called him Uncle Harry. Senator McCain is trying to use superficial similarities to President Truman to camouflage his totally opposite policies. Senator McCain opposes everything President Truman stood for. President Truman promoted universal health care.
“Republicans then and now, including John McCain, are against it. President Truman opposed tax cuts, primarily benefiting the wealthy. Republicans then and now, that includes John McCain, are for it.
“President Truman flatly opposed Republican economic policies. He called it trickle down economics. He said that GOP means 'gluttons of privilege.' He advised: ‘If you want to live like a Republican, vote for the Democrats!’"

how far we've come
On a day when John McCain speaks to Americans from Harry Truman's Independence, MO., Barry Obama calls for protecting the middle class by...raising the FDIC insurance levels from $100,000 to $250,000.
Apparently Barry thinks middle class folks keep a lot of cash in the bank. No wonder he doesn't offer anything to help working people--he doesn't know the first thing about them.
