Sen. John McCainSen. John McCain                                                                 Well, John McCain is no Sarah Palin --at least when it comes to rhetorical whiz bang.

But we knew that. Public speaking has never been a McCain strength, and it showed again tonight as McCain delivered his acceptance speech in St. Paul to wrap up the 2008 Republican National Convention.

Still, he was solid, especially when he rallied his party to regain the trust it's lost with the American people in recent years due to scandal and overspending. (Disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff was sentenced to four years in federal prison today for his corrupt lobbying activities).

And his call to make education "the civil rights issue of this century" was particularly strong.

His closing elevated the crowd:

"Fight for what's right for our country.

"Fight for the ideals and character of a free people.

"Fight for our children's future.

Fight for justice and opportunity for all."
