UPDATE: (5:55 p.m.) The GOP is hitting back, saying The Times story is wrong and that the McCain camp was thorough in its review of Palin.

Go here for the story.

All kinds of questions were being raised today over just how thoroughly the McCain camp vetted Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

The GOP state party chairman of Alaska, Randy Ruedrich, said he knew of no vetting process. Neither did the current mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, which Palin once led as mayor.

Alaska state Rep. Gail Phillips, a former speaker of the state House, said Palin's selection stunned everybody and made her wonder about the thoroughness of the review process.

"I started calling around and asking, and I have not been able to find one person that was called," Phillips said. "...I haven't found anybody who was asked anything."

McCain's camp has a team in Alaska now...reportedly to answer questions from reporters who are descending on the state.
