UPDATE: (9:45 A.M.) Palin is McCain's veep.

Wow. Just like to point out that you guys didn't know it either.

(9:35 a.m.) AP reports that it's Palin.

****

The darkhorse pick of the moment in the GOP veepGov. Sarah PalinGov. Sarah Palin sweepstakes?

That'd be Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, a self-styled “hockey mom” and political reformer.

She's a first-term governor who's been in office not quite two years.

Two strategists close to John McCain this morning said all signs pointed to the 44-year-old Palin. The strategists spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized by the McCain camp to discuss the matter. There was no confirmation from McCain or his advisers.

McCain is set to announce his pick at 11 a.m. today in Dayton, Ohio.

On one hand, the choice of a woman might appear to be a masterstroke, a move that would instantly shake up the math of the 2008 race and appeal to independents and conservative Democrats still miffed that Obama passed over Hillary Clinton.

But Palin's lack of experience would go a long way toward wiping out the GOP's primary issue against Barack Obama, which is he's not experienced enough.
