The actions of a few do not adequately reflect the sentiment of the whole. I find the actions of those you cited above to be disgusting. So -In a way, I agree with you.

Do you think the U.S. Government is adequately securing our borders?

If not, what would be your solution to the problem of illegal immigration?

And I am surprised McCain would condone their actions. I also found a couple videos of Minutemen shooting border crossers but they were filmed at night with no light so I didn't post them. I understand why the Minutemen are motivated to do what they do but I part ways with them because of their violence.

But no, I don't think our borders are secure and neither are our ports.

We can reduce illegal immigration if we penalize employers who hire the workers. And I mean really penalize them, with heavy fines and maybe even prison time. We also need to reform or toss out NAFTA and CAFTA. Trade policies are destroying the economies of several American countries. I don't think we can ever stop foreign trade, nor is it realistic to do so. But we need to make it fair for all involved nations.

So I favor going after the reasons the immigrants come here rather than the immigrants themselves. There are at least 12 million of them; we don't begin to have the law enforcement capabilities to round them all up and deport them. If we make it hard to find work they will stop coming.

Current deportation policies seem strict enough for me. They are sent back and separated from family here forever. Sneaking back in gets harder all the time because we have increased border patrol.

But I also don't believe we can ever secure our borders well enough to keep all immigrants out. Even in the middle east where Israel has built walls, they still have people getting around them. People also got over the Berlin Wall. And I don't want to live in a walled country.

I really see this as more of a political issue than a law enforcement issue. And the solution is in DC rather than at local levels. But no I am not holding my breath waiting for Congress to come up with fair and common sense solutions.

But who sets policy because they and only they can pass laws?

I know a lot of Hispanic immigrants right here in this community. I have no way of knowing how many are legal and how many are not. But I also know several families who have had members deported. And that is always very very sad. It's like a death. They know the chances for their deported family member to come back are remote at best.

I have heard them talk about why they come here and it is always about earning money, lots more money than they can earn in their native country.

I also know most of these people as hard working and law abiding. I realize there are Hispanic gangs all over America but there are also white gangs and black gangs everywhere in this country. I have a good friend who lives in a small town that is 100% white and the county sheriff busted up a gang of white kids who were cooking meth in an abandoned barn outside of town and burglarizing houses in town. So I don't buy the Hispanics are gang bangers argument.

Wrong on two levels. One, ever heard of something called "executive orders", Jeetz? It's the same thing as "setting policy." Same is true of Bush's "signing statements."

Two, the executive branch, by way of the departments and agencies have a great deal of say in the administration of new and existing laws. They write departmental policies and they enforce the law.

Simple. Massive crippling fines for companies and felony charges for the executives responsible for hiring illegal immigrants. Nothing but financial losses and jail time is going to make companies stop hiring illegal immigrants.

Why do people immigrate to the U.S. from Central and South America? Jobs. (It's not out fabulous welfare system.) Make the jobs available to illegal immigrants dry up and the number of illegal immigrants coming to this country will be reduced significantly.

And before you rush to the defense of the private sector, yes, many if not most of these companies know they're hiring illegal immigrants. Make an example of a few of them and they'll get on board.

Almost all are either out of work or making less money than they once did. But most of them aren't blaming the undocumented workers. Several of them have told me about a guy they know who is a contractor who is paying undocumented workers one dollar an hour to work. He goes down on SW Blvd and picks up his workers.

That should be against the law. If it is, the law isn't being enforced.

There are also companies right here in KC who not only hire these workers but help them get up here to work. And they find them housing here.

The employers also don't always hire these workers as employees, they hire them as contractors. That way they don't have to take any taxes out of their paychecks. Or pay matching Social Security.

Actually when it comes to businesses and hiring illegals , I would seize it outright and sell it off for the assets.

Stop this namby pamby crap in its tracks after a few of those. If Walmart has a complete store sold off land and building it might get the attention of the Chamber of Commerce.

And after a few locals lost their homes and businesses it might get the attention of the local roofer dudes.

Then I would look into the entire concept of "Immigration" and ask some tough questions such as:
Is it needed IN ANY FORM? Perhaps not. I would stop it for at least 10 years until we get the situation and the illegals weeded out.

Then allow in only educated and labor for a specific time and job...then they leave.

Canada lets in a certain amount in and they require the business to provide a TWO WAY ticket to send them back, and they check in and out when they leave.

Further, as we start to pay wages to legal workers, are we ready for the price increase? If it costs more to produce, the cost will be passed on to the consumer.

Your Democrats can hammer ever one of Bush's executive orders by refusing to fund them.

Issue National ID cards.

It is possible with today's technology to issue every person in the United States an ID card which could be used to check a national database to verify their status. Every visitor to the country would get one upon entering and they would also go into the database. No ID card would mean you are an illegal and no employer would be able to legally employ them.
