Barack Obama spelled out his view of the meaning of patriotism and the value of dissent today in a 30-minute address in Independence just four days before America celebrates the Fourth of July.
In the wake of sniping from Republicans and Internet critics, the Illinois senator said he was surprised to find his own patriotism being questioned as he launched his campaign for president.
Obama said he would not allow his own patriotism to be questioned in a remark that drew ringing applause in the Truman Memorial Building.
"I will not stand by as others question mine," he said. Obama added, "I will not question the patriotism of others in this campaign."
He drew the morning's first standing ovation when he quoted a son of Missouri, Mark Twain. "As Twain once wrote, patriotism is supporting your country all the time and your government when it deserves it."
Obama pointed to a controversial ad run by Moveon.org that raised doubts about the patriotism of Gen. David Petraeus, the top commander in Iraq. In the ad, Petraeus was referred to as "General Betray-us."
"We can no longer afford these sorts of divisions," the Democrat said.
Obama warned that arguments about patriotism surely will continue.
"But surely we can agree that no party or political philosophy has a monopoly on political patriotism."
In the crowd today were a host of Democratic dignitaries, including Congressmen Emanuel Cleaver and Ike Skelton.

Good Speech
Listened to the whole speech it was quite good. I hope this puts the issue to rest unfortunately I fear the haters won't be deterred.
